INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard headed to Detroit on Tuesday to meet with top automakers at the North American Auto Show.
The mayor will talk about his plan to switch city vehicles to plug-in hybrid vehicles or ones that run on natural gas . The mayor wants that to happen by 2025.
If it happens, Indianapolis would be the first city to switch to alternative vehicles. The plan applies to all city vehicles, including police cars, snow plows and trash trucks. Ballard hopes the plan will lead to the development of a hybrid police car than maintains the power needed while also achieving 40 miles per gallon fuel efficiency.
After visiting Detroit, Ballard plans to head to Washington, D.C. to discuss his plans there.
