Shortly before he was set to tee off in the first round, Bubba Watson withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open, citing illness.
Bubba Watson, winner of the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, withdrew from the 2013 tourney shortly before the first tee time went off at the oceanside La Jolla course. Watson announced the decision on his Twitter feed, and said that he and his wife are still battling an illness, something that bothered him earlier this month at Kapalua.
Watson was one of the headliners this week, set to play with local favorite and fellow lefty Phil Mickelson and defending champion Brandt Snedeker in the first two rounds.
The defending Masters champ battled the flu at the opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Maui three weeks ago, but did manage to complete the three-round, two-day event.
The flu has bothered several stars here in the first month of the season, with both Zach Johnson and Dustin Johnson contending with it at the Sony Open. Dustin withdrew in the second round at Wailae. Most recently, Mickelson was hit by the bug, which forced him to travel late Wednesday to the Humana Challenge last week and miss the week of preparation and pre-tournament events.
