Digital TV causing an increase in TV watching?

japan.internet.com reported on the 6th regular survey into terrestrial digital television conducted by goo Research. However, the regularity of this survey is diminishing somewhat now that it is pretty much ubiquitous.

Demographics

Between the 5th and 9th of November 2012 1,086 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.0% of the sample were male, 16.2% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.0% in their forties, and 28.1% aged fifty or older.

One possible reason for the increase in television watching might be more to do with the depressed economy and people spending more time at home, thus it?s not that digital makes programmes any better, it?s that people cannot afford to do much else.

The survey ends by noting that it would be nice if the focus of the survey could move to consumption of contents; broadcast versus recorded versus on demand versus YouTube, for example.

Research results

First, people were asked what kinds of terrestrial digital television receivers they had. The most popular option was 84.4% with a terrestrial digital television, then 21.8% with a terrestrial digital recorder, 18.5% used cable television, 15.3% had One Seg (mobile phone, etc) decoders, and so on. Overall, 97.4% had some form of terrestrial digital television device.

Iran, Arabs criticize delay of Middle East nuclear talks

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and Arab nations on Monday criticized a decision to put off talks on banning atomic bombs in the Middle East, with Tehran blaming the United States for a "serious setback" to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The United States said on Friday that the mid-December conference on creating a zone free of weapons of mass destruction would not occur and did not make clear when, or whether, it would take place. The United States, Britain and Russia are co-sponsors of the meeting.

The postponement "will have a negative impact on regional security and the international system to prevent nuclear proliferation as a whole," Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby said in a statement.

Iran, which is accused by the West of developing a nuclear weapons capability, said this month it would participate in the talks that had been due to take place in Helsinki, Finland.

Asked about the U.S. announcement, Iranian nuclear envoy Ali Asghar Soltanieh told state broadcaster Press TV from Vienna:

"It is a serious setback to the NPT and this is a clear sign that the U.S. is not committed to the obligation of a world free of nuclear weapons."

Elaraby said all regional states except Israel - widely believed to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal - had voiced willingness to attend the conference.

He called for urgent meeting of senior Arab officials this week to consider the developments.

Even if the talks eventually occur, Western diplomats and experts expect little progress any time soon due to the deep-rooted animosities in the region, notably the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israeli concerns about Iran's nuclear program.

Washington feared the conference could be used as a forum to criticize its ally Israel, a concern only likely to have increased after eight days of Israeli-Palestinian fighting that ended with a ceasefire last week.

SECURITY

Israel, which says say Tehran is the Middle East's main proliferation threat, had not said whether it would attend.

Iran and Arab states often say Israel's presumed nuclear arsenal poses a threat to Middle East peace and security.

The plan for a meeting to lay the groundwork for the possible creation of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction was agreed at a 2010 conference of 189 parties to the 1970 NPT, a treaty designed to prevent the spread of nuclear arms in the world.

Israel, which neither confirms nor denies having nuclear arms, is not a signatory.

U.S. and Israeli officials have said a nuclear arms-free zone in the Middle East could not be a reality until there was broad Arab-Israeli peace and Iran curbed its nuclear program, which Tehran says is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the U.N. nuclear agency, said: "The U.S. has taken hostage this Helsinki conference for the sake of Israel ... they want to support the Israelis' nuclear weapon capability."

Russia and Britain signaled in separate statements at the weekend their hope for a delay to be as short as possible and that the talks could be held next year instead.

The U.S. State Department said it would keep working to try to bring about a meeting, adding such a gathering must take into account the security of all the states in the region and operate on the basis of consensus.

Tracking the thousands of tiny objects cluttering up Earth's orbit is becoming an expensive proposition for the military. To save money and improve their coverage, they're soliciting help from amateur astronomers worldwide.

The DARPA-funded?SpaceView project hopes to organize the astronomy community into an?extension?of the?U.S. Air Force?s own sky-watchers, the?Space Surveillance Network. There are estimated to be around half a million bits of space junk in orbit, but even with 29 space-monitoring sensors at their command, the?Space Surveillance Network?can only track the biggest 30,000 or so.

Deploying a dozen more sensor?arrays and facilities would be expensive, so they're outsourcing junk tracking ? to pretty much anyone who wants to help. Lt.?Col.?Travis Blake, the Air Force officer overseeing the program, explains on the SpaceView website:

There is an untold amount of potential in the amateur astronomy community that we hope to use to broaden our situational awareness in space.?SpaceView should provide more diverse data from different geographic locations to ensure we have a robust understanding of the current and future state of our space assets.

Home astronomers will be given access to "high-quality astronomical hardware," and in return would handle the operation and housing of the gear. When it's not being used for tracking bits of fast-moving space trash, the?government gear could be used for whatever its caretaker wanted: photography, observation, or?teaching, for example.

Getting involved is as simple as signing up for SpaceView's?mailing list and answering some questions regarding expertise and ability to securely?house the equipment. No timeframe is mentioned, but the program is open to sign-ups right now, having begun registration over the weekend at the?Arizona Science and Astronomy Expo in Tucson.

The trouble is that, since they handed over their guns at the end of a decade-long insurrection in 2006, Nepal's Maoists have done no better at running the Himalayan republic than the corrupt and incompetent political mainstream they joined.

Last May, its quarrelsome political parties missed a deadline to write a new constitution. As a result, Bhattarai's rivals say his government has no legal status, the country has no parliament, and there is now no agreement on a date for elections to end the stalemate.

"Unfortunately the old parliamentary parties are trying to get their pound of flesh, not agreeing ... on anything until they get the leadership of the government," Bhattarai told Reuters in an interview in his leafy official compound in the capital, Kathmandu, last week.

Most pressing, due to an impasse over this year's budget, the caretaker government's authority to draw from the Treasury will lapse this Thursday, which means it will be unable to pay the salaries of half a million civil servants, soldiers and police.

"We won't be able to supply even essential drugs to the sick in hospitals, pay old-age pensions and feed inmates in jails beyond that day," bemoans Shanta Raj Subedi, the most senior bureaucrat at the Finance Ministry.

Economists warn that development projects will grind to a halt in a country where one quarter of the 26.6 million population live below the poverty line, the economy will shrink and black markets, money-laundering and smuggling will flourish.

"It will be ... an economy in anarchy," said Chiranjibi Nepal, who teaches economics at Kathmandu University.

"CORRUPT AND FECKLESS"

For some, the political limbo in Kathmandu has become so familiar it hardly amounts to a crisis.

"There is no parliament, no budget and no constitution, and yet the country moves on," said Kunda Dixit, editor of the Nepali Times. "All the parties are so corrupt and so feckless that not having a government is actually beneficial because there is no one to make all those mistakes."

However, the Maoists' rivals are running out of patience.

Bhattarai's predecessor, Jhala Nath Khanal of the anachronistically named Unified Marxist-Leninist communist party, says that unless Bhattarai steps down and forms a "unity" government his group will continue to block the passage of a new budget and may call for a popular uprising to topple him.

Thousands of protesters shouting "You can't impose totalitarianism!" and "Set up a consensus government!" marched through the streets of temple-studded Kathmandu last Friday, cranking up pressure on Bhattarai to quit.

But the Maoist leader remained serene and defiant.

"I am the only legal prime minister," Bhattarai said. "They are not ready to face the next elections, they fear they will be routed in the elections - that's why they want the leadership of the government," he said of opposition parties.

He said that if the opposition continued to block the budget, he would seek a presidential decree to push it through.

However, Bhattarai conceded that President Ram Baran Yadav - who is supposed to stand above the political fray, but is a member of the centrist Nepali Congress Party - was hardly an ally, and indeed there have been rumours that the president may try to end the crisis by grabbing executive power himself.

GATHERING CLOUDS

A dapper figure in a brown turtle-neck top under a Western-style jacket, it is hard to picture the 58-year-old Bhattarai as one of the leaders in the Maoists' guerrilla struggle against government troops between 1996 and 2006, which took the lives of some 16,000 people.

The Maoists joined a peace process in 2006, and emerged from elections two years later as the largest group in a constituent assembly that voted to abolish Nepal's centuries-old monarchy.

Bhattarai succeeded in retiring thousands of Maoist fighters and integrating hundreds into the national army, removing a serious threat to peace. However, demands for the country to be divided into states along ethnic lines derailed his efforts to establish a new constitution and end the political instability.

Dixit, the Nepali Times editor, said that, despite their titles, none of the country's parties are ideologically communist any more and, decrying the entrenched corruption, joked that "political power no longer comes from the barrel of a gun - it comes from their wallets".

He said one of the biggest threats to Nepal was the breakdown of development in the provinces, where there have been no local elections for 12 years and public funds are plundered by corrupt officials.

Other clouds are gathering as politicians feud in Kathmandu.

A hard core of Maoists disillusioned with the party's shift away from the radical left and failure to deliver land reforms, have broken away. This rump group is now threatening to go back to war but, even if they don't resort to violence, they could lose the Maoists' votes when elections are eventually held.

Finally, demands for ethnic autonomy are growing across the country, particularly in the southern plains.

"The country could go towards a new confrontation," warned opposition leader Khunal. "There might be a mass movement, and what could happen then nobody can tell."

I mean anyone can get a nice haircut, nice suit and smile for the camera with a little make-up and a complete make-over. Heck, why is it that anyone who can read a teleprompter is assumed to know what he's talking about, come on already.

We live in the most powerful and greatest nation on Earth, it is by far and away the most awesome country ever created in human history. Why you ask? Simple, one word actually, it's called; Capitalism. And it's just amazing that no one gets it. Maybe a re-read of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is in order for all those news commentators and newspaper reporters who love to take a jab or make a persnickety comment in their otherwise shallow news stories.

And why is it that the editors of these TV News programs, newspapers and radio segments allow this nonsense to be played on the air, why It's pure opinion and it's not based on anything. State legislatures: why Republican wave of 2010 is here to stay

Election 2012 is not expected to be a repeat of the historic 2010 Republican sweep, but recent redistricting might have helped the GOP cement its ascendancy for a few more years.

Tuesday voting will not likely match the historic Republican sweep of state legislatures two years ago, but Republicans are expected remain on top as they take advantage of the redistricting changes made since 2010 on their watch.

Twenty chambers are forecast to switch parties ? higher than the average of 13 that typically switch every two-year election cycle. But unlike 2010, when all 22 chambers that flipped control turned Republican, both Democrats and Republicans could make gains on Nov. 6, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), a research organization in Washington.?

"Right now, some races are so close, it does not appear to be a big wave for either party,? says Tim Storey, an elections analyst with the NCSL.

Thanks to 2010, Republicans have majority control of 59 of the 98 state chambers. Democrats currently control 36 chambers, and three are tied. ?Republicans are at their highest point of control of legislating since the 1920s, in not just winning seats, but winning chambers across the country," says Mr. Storey. The midterm vote "was a sweep in every state of the word.??

But the tea party surge that fueled the Republican gains does not appear to be playing as much of a role this year.

The state legislature election ?is very localized, it is not a wave cycle. This is the first time since 2004 we are seeing the election turn out in a way where one party does not run the table on all close contests,? says Louis Jacobson, who is forecasting the election at PolitiFact, a fact-checking project operated by the Tampa Bay Times in Florida. ?It?s going to matter on candidate quality, not weaker candidates riding on the coattails of a strong party wave.?

That doesn?t mean Tuesday?s election will not make the history books. Expected wins for Republicans in both the Arkansas House and Senate will give Republicans control of every legislative chamber in the South. Democrats have controlled state politics in Arkansas for more than 130 years.

Steady Republican gains since the days when Bill Clinton was president helped move the numbers away from Democrats, plus recent redistricting efforts have favored more sparsely populated parts of the state, where something as simple as a familiar name can prove decisive.

Angry Birds Star Wars adds sci-fi flavor to bird flinging, available today, we go hands-on

Finland's biggest game studio is heading back into the coop, pulling out its Angry Birds franchise for yet another go on a whole mess of platforms -- this time, even Windows 8 and its mobile counterpart get some attention. Moreover, Rovio's teamed with the folks at LucasArts (now part of the Disney family) to craft an entirely thematic experience: enter Angry Birds Star Wars. But fret not -- just because Angry Birds Star Wars seems like a shameless tie-in doesn't mean it's a bad game (it is, however, a shameless tie-in, no matter which way you cut it). In fact, it's quite good, melding pieces of Angry Birds Space -- arguably the best and most creative entry in the Angry Birds franchise -- with new gameplay elements. Rather than birds which explode or other such modifiers, post-fling, Angry Birds Star Wars equips each of several themed birds with one weapon apiece. An Obi-Wan Kenobi-themed bird uses The Force to push enemies or blocks, while a Han Solo-themed bird fires three blasts from a space pistol, just to name a few.

That Angry Birds Space component is little more than gravity effects, but it helps to mix up the often redundant level design -- if you've played more than one Angry Birds game, you've seen most of what's on offer here. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, per se, but be forewarned if you're expecting the kind of innovation we saw from Rovio's last Angry Birds spinoff, Bad Piggies. Angry Birds Star Wars launches today on iOS ($0.99 / iPhone, $2.99 / iPad), Android (Free SD version, HD is $2.99), Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac ($4.99), PC, Windows Phone ($0.99), and Windows 8. WAMG Interview ? Jack Snyder, Director of FATAL CALL | We Are ...

Interview conducted by Tom Stockman November 5th, 2012

Jack Snyder is a St. Louis-based writer and director with two feature films under his belt. GHOST IMAGE was a 2007 supernatural thriller starring Elisabeth Rohm? and Stacey Dash that has aired over 250 times on the Showtime Network and The Movie Channel. It is available on DVD, and is distributed overseas through 20th Century Fox and NBC/Universal. Jack Snyder?s newest feature is the thriller FATAL CALL starring Kevin Sorbo and Danielle Harris. It was filmed last year in the St. Louis area and will be playing at the Tivoli Theater Sunday night, November 11th at 8:30pm as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival. Jack took time out of his schedule to talk to We Are Movie Geeks about his films and his upcoming projects.

We Are Movie Geeks: Are you from St. Louis originally?

Jack Snyder: Yes, I am.

WAMG: Did you see a lot of movies as a kid?

JS: Yes, I guess I saw as much as I could beg my parents to take me to and what I could catch on TV. My most movie-going period was when I turned 17 and could drive and then went to movies a lot.

WAMG: Did you always want to be a filmmaker?

JS: Yes, I remember wanting to make films when I was a kid. I had other interests but was always drawn back to film. My first movie I made when I was about 14 or 15.

WAMG: Super-8 movies in your back yard?

JS: Exactly.

WAMG: Do you still have those films

JS: Yes, some of them.

WAMG: Did you study filmmaking?

JS: No, believe or not I?ve never taken a film or writing course in my life. I learned filmmaking from doing and reading books. I learned screenwriting from doing it and reading books as well. The irony is that I teach those subjects at UMSL (University of Missouri in St. Louis) now!

WAMG: FATAL CALL is your second film. Your first was GHOST IMAGE. What did you do before you began making feature films?

JS: I made several short films that won a slew of awards. I did make a feature film on 16mm back in the ?80s, a horror film called. Believe it or not, that was called FATAL EXAM so I?ve made two features with the word Fatal in the title. FATAL CALL was originally titled CALL ME ON TUESDAY but my distributor wanted me to change the title. So that was in the ?80s. What I?ve done for a living is the video business. I?ve shot weddings, I?ve shot industrial films, I?ve been a hired gun and a hired editor.

WAMG: Let?s talk about FATAL CALL. It was originally called CALL ME ON TUESDAY. Why did they want you to change the title?

JS: They said that if someone is flipping through the gable guide and they see something called CALL ME ON TUESDAY, that doesn?t tell them if it?s a romance, a drama, a comedy, or what. Whereas with FATAL CALL you immediately know that it?s a thriller. Though I still think CALL ME ON TUESDAY is a better title, I understand what they are talking about. They sold GHOST IMAGE to Twentieth Century Fox and MCA-Universal and Showtime and The Movie Channel, so they know that end of the business very well.

WAMG: Where were some of the locations of FATAL CALL?

JS: With the exception of some exteriors, the film was shot exclusively in Sauget, Illinois (just across the river from downtown St. Louis). Judee Sauget is one of the co-producers so the whole thing was shot in Sauget. We did some helicopter establishing shots in downtown St. Louis and we even did a shot in downtown Clayton to double for a location in downtown St. Louis but you?d never be able to tell. Those were second unit shots.

WAMG: Is that a refinery that the climax takes place on?

JS: Yes, it is a closed-down plant on the property of other plants that are active. We had some scenes shot at The Oz nightclub there in Sauget as well.

WAMG: I noticed your characters in FATAL CALL were drinking Lemp Beer!

JS: Yes, I?m friends with Steve DeBellis, owner of the Lemp Beer brand and publisher of the St. Louis Globe Democrat (the world?s largest one-man newspaper) and he provided the beer.

WAMG: I?m friends with Steve as well. He?s good at providing beer. What are some of your favorite movies that were shot in St. Louis?

JS: Besides mine? (laughs) I am a big John Carpenter fan and when he shot ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK here (in 1980), I went down to the set and accidentally walked on to the set by walking up an alley right on to it and he was standing right there talking with Debra Hill and I spoke with him briefly.

WAMG: I noticed with both FATAL CALL and GHOST IMAGE you don?t film a lot of exploitative elements. There?s no nudity or much blood in either one. Is this a conscious decision?

JS: Yes, and it?s also a practical decision. The moment you introduce blood makeup effects, you slow the whole production down. Also, if we?re going to get it on television, or distribution period, you?re better off with a PG-13 film than an R-rated film. There is a bedroom scene in FATAL CALL and that could give us an R-rating. The distributor said to shoot that scene in a way that could give us a PG-13 or an R. Fact is, with the exception of how many F-bombs you have in a film, you take that off the table, there?s no solid line that separates a PG-13 and an R. It?s by a per-film basis. Until we go to the ratings board, we don?t know.

WAMG: Danielle Harris is the star of FATAL CALL. Were you aware of her Scream Queen background?

JS: Of course. I can honestly say FATAL CALL was the first script I?ve ever written where I?ve pictured an actor in the role. Normally I don?t do that but I wrote it with Danielle and Jason London in my mind.

WAMG: How did she get involved?

JS: It?s very difficult to reach an actor directly. The trick is to hire a casting director in Hollywood. They know all the agents in town and call them and say they have a script for their client. So a call from a casting director is taken a lot more seriously than a call from a filmmaker.

WAMG: Did any other name actors audition for FATAL CALL?

JS: Well, name actors normally don?t audition. What generally happens is, you make them an offer and beyond that, you can get people to audition. Lochlyn Monro for example, maybe not a household name, but he?s been in over 140 films including UNFORGIVEN, and he?s in FATAL CALL.

WAMG: What was Kevin Sorbo like to work with?

JS: Kevin was great. We only had him for three days, but that was a lot of shooting in three days. He was great to work with. When you?re making an indie film, there?s no wriggle room for getting people in in advance to rehearse so they literally fly in in the evening and are at working filming the next morning. You rehearse it a couple of times and you shoot it.

WAMG: I?d heard Kevin Sorbo had some health issues.

JS: People are confused about that but he had just written a book where he talked about the strokes that he had. But those strokes happened in the late ?90s. That?s what it was. He was on the interview circuit with his book while we were shooting, so that?s what that is all about.

WAMG: Are there some local actors that you like to work with?

JS: I like to work with all the local actors that we can. Generally we have a Hollywood cast for the leads, and the rest of the cast is made up of locals. There are lots of good actors here and sometimes it?s hard to make a decision who to go with. There?s a local actor named Brian Peters who?s also a stunt man, so he played a character in FATAL CALL and did his own stunts and also stunt doubled for Jason London. That was a great experience working with him.

WAMG: Where will FATAL CALL be playing?

JS: I don?t know yet. It did play at the Cannes Film Market this past May and we got great feedback for that. It?s at the American Film Market as we speak, a screening there, and of course the St. Louis International Film Festival. One of the things that separates indie film distribution from studio film is that a big film knows when it?s going to be released as soon as they start filming it. With an indie film, you just hope the distributor can do something with it. They?re working hard on getting it a studio deal though. FATAL CALL was presented to Twentieth-Century Fox almost a month ago so right now we?re just waiting.

WAMG: Who are some of your favorite directors? You mentioned John Carpenter.

JS: I like Carpenter?s early work. I like Steven Soderbergh, I used to be a fan of Spielberg and James Cameron but now I?m more interested in directors like Cronenberg, but I don?t keep a list in my head of my favorite directors. Christopher Nolan right now is probably my favorite director.

WAMG: Do you have a lot of screenplays that you?ve written that you?re sitting on?

JS: Yes, what I do is teach at UMSL and I write screenplays for other people. I?m writing one for a producer right now. This is my third or fourth screenplay for hire.

WAMG: What?s next for Jack Snyder?

JS: I have a script that I?ve finished. It?s titled A WILL TO KILL and we hope to go into production on it next summer. Then I have a science fiction script that isn?t finished yet that I hope to get produced.

WAMG: Do you think these will be filmed in St. Louis?

JS: A WILL TO KILL will be filmed primarily in St. Louis, but some desert scenes will be filmed outside Los Angeles. The science fiction can be shot anywhere since the bulk of it takes place on a set anyway so we?d most likely build a set in a warehouse here.
